This is the goal
We have 2 different methods that you can try. Method 1 is the basic, simple version and Method 2 is a little more complicated. The main difference between Method 1 and Method 2 is in the initial wrapping of the belt and final aesthetic.
In Method 1, you will be able to see the 2 different layers of the belt from the back but Method 2 will give you a nice straight line.
Bottom line, start with Method 1 and go for Method 2 only if you are feeling extra ambitious or you really care what the back of your (or your child’s) belt looks like.
Method 1: The Simple Way
STEP 1
Cross your (child’s) gi left over right
***HINT: the logo should show on the lapel that is crossed in front
STEP 2
Find the middle of the belt and place it over your (child’s) belly button (or close to that general area)
STEP 3
Wrap the two ends of the belt around your (child’s) body, cross the ends over each other in the back and bring them both back around to the front.
***HINT: check that the two ends of the belt are even (or close to even)
STEP 4
Cross one of the ends of the belt over the other, keeping the belt flat against your (child’s) stomach.
***NOTE: you can cross left over right OR right over left, either is fine
STEP 5
With the end of the belt that you crossed over (in this case, the right end of the belt), wrap under both layers and up. Pull tight.
CHECKPOINT
If your (child’s) belt looks like the picture below, you didn’t go under both layers. Try again.
STEP 6
Take the end of the belt that is on top and tuck it between the two layers of the belt. Keep this end above the other (bottom) end of the belt.
STEP 7
With the bottom end of the belt, go up and through the loop formed by the top end and pull tight.
Ta-da!
CHECKPOINT
If your (child’s) belt looks like this, you did something wrong.
You did this…
But you should have done this…

Method 2: The Fancy Way
STEP 1
Cross your (child’s) gi left over right.
[This is the same first step as in Method 1]
STEP 2
Start with 8-12 inches of one end of the belt and place on your (child’s) belly button.
STEP 3
Wrap the long end of the belt around your (child’s) body while holding the short end in place.
STEP 4
When you get to the front, place the long end over the short end.
STEP 5
Wrap the long end of the belt around again.
STEP 6
As you come around the second time, again, go over the short end of the belt.
STEP 7
Once you’ve reached the middle with the end that you’ve been wrapping,
STEP 8
Tuck it under both layers and pull up.
STEP 9
Take the end of the belt that is on top and tuck it between the two layers of the belt. Keep this end above the bottom end of the belt.
STEP 10
With the bottom end of the belt, go up and through the loop formed by the top end and pull tight.
